SAP PIM in 2026: MDG, Commerce Cloud PCM or a third-party PIM?

There is no SAP product called "SAP PIM". Companies running SAP manage product data with three building blocks: the product master in SAP S/4HANA, SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) for data quality, and the product content management built into SAP Commerce Cloud. Many add a third-party PIM for marketing content. This guide compares the options, explains what changed in 2026 and shows how product data becomes marketing content.

The options at a glance

OptionWhat it doesBest forMain limit
SAP S/4HANA product masterHolds operational data: identifiers, specifications, prices, logisticsProcurement, production, supply chainNot built for rich descriptions, images or channel content
SAP Master Data Governance (MDG)Creates, validates and approves master data with workflows and quality rulesData quality and compliance across the ERPGovernance tool for data teams, not an enrichment tool for marketing
SAP Commerce Cloud, product content management (PCM)Manages catalogs, attributes, media and translations for the online storeCompanies whose web store runs on SAP CommerceTied to the SAP Commerce storefront; other channels need extra work

SAP Master Data Governance (MDG)

MDG is SAP's master data management solution. It controls how materials and other master data are created, checked and approved before they reach S/4HANA, which keeps one reliable record across the company. It is strong on governance and weak on marketing enrichment: long descriptions, image sets, translations and channel-specific attributes are not its purpose. For the difference between these families of tools, see our guide to PIM vs DAM vs MDM.

SAP Commerce Cloud and PCM

SAP Commerce Cloud, formerly Hybris, includes product content management for the online catalog: attributes, media, multilingual descriptions and catalog structure. It is the natural choice when the web store runs on SAP Commerce and product content mostly serves that store.

What changed in 2026. The last on-premise release of SAP Commerce (2205) left mainstream maintenance on 31 July 2026 and moved to customer-specific maintenance. No end-of-life date has been set, and PCM remains part of SAP Commerce Cloud. Companies still on premise are reviewing their options: move to SAP Commerce Cloud and keep PCM, or put a dedicated PIM in front of their commerce platform.

Third-party PIMs connected to SAP

Many enterprises keep the operational record in SAP and add a PIM such as Akeneo, Contentserv, Inriver, Salsify or Stibo Systems for enrichment. The usual flow: SAP sends identifiers, specifications and prices to the PIM; marketing teams enrich, translate and approve; the PIM publishes to the web store, marketplaces and distributor portals.

Before choosing a connector, check four points:

  1. Who maintains it: the PIM vendor, an integrator or your own team.
  2. Which SAP releases it supports (S/4HANA cloud or on premise, SAP Commerce Cloud).
  3. Which data flows in which direction, and how often.
  4. Which system wins when the same field changes in SAP and in the PIM.

For manufacturers, Katana takes an ERP-oriented approach, and Sales Layer targets multi-channel catalogs. A B2B PIM strategy helps when technical attributes outgrow standard ERP fields.

How to choose

Your situationUsual choice
Data quality problems across ERP modulesSAP MDG
One web store on SAP Commerce Cloud, few other channelsPCM in SAP Commerce Cloud
Many channels, marketplaces, distributors, many languagesA third-party PIM connected to SAP
SAP Commerce on premise, release 2205Plan the move: SAP Commerce Cloud with PCM, or a dedicated PIM

Whatever the choice, track a few PIM KPIs from the start, such as time to market for a new product and the share of products complete in every channel.

From product data to marketing content

SAP and PIMs manage data; they do not produce banners, social posts or printable product sheets. That step is usually manual, and prices or specifications drift between the source and the visuals. A creative automation platform closes the gap: product data fills locked, on-brand templates, and every format is generated from the same record.

Brandeploy: brand management and creative automation in one platform

Brandeploy helps enterprise teams produce on-brand content at scale: display banners, social assets, product sheets and localized campaigns, from one brand system. Product data from SAP or your PIM can feed templates through spreadsheets or the REST API, and visuals come from the built-in asset library or your DAM. FAQ

Does SAP have a PIM?

There is no SAP product called SAP PIM. Product data is handled by SAP S/4HANA (the product master), SAP Master Data Governance for data quality and approval, and the product content management built into SAP Commerce Cloud for the web catalog. Many companies add a third-party PIM for marketing enrichment.

What is the difference between SAP MDG and a PIM?

SAP MDG governs master data across the ERP: creation, validation and approval of materials, customers or suppliers. A PIM enriches customer-facing product content (descriptions, images, translations, channel attributes) and sends it to e-commerce sites, marketplaces and distributors. See our guide to PIM vs DAM vs MDM.

Is SAP Commerce PCM being discontinued?

No end-of-life date has been announced for PCM. What changed is that the last on-premise release of SAP Commerce (2205) left mainstream maintenance on 31 July 2026. PCM remains part of SAP Commerce Cloud.

Which PIMs connect to SAP?

Most enterprise PIMs offer SAP connectors, including Akeneo, Contentserv, Inriver, Salsify and Stibo Systems. Check whether the connector is maintained by the vendor, which SAP release it supports and which data flows in each direction.

How do you turn SAP product data into marketing content?

A PIM or SAP stores the data; a creative automation platform such as Brandeploy uses it to fill on-brand templates for banners, social posts or product sheets, via spreadsheets or its REST API, so prices and specifications stay consistent with the source.
